There is a lot said about antiquing brass jewelry components.  There are some pretty harsh chemicals and processes available .  Some of these processes will take you from bright brass to "OH NO, OH NO, OH NO!" in a hurry.  Well, here is our secret way to put a controlled and stable patina on raw brass.

What is under the lid?

It's a secret!

What can this be?  It looks like a simple plastic storage container with a tight fitting lid!

Goodness! What is this?

Can it be that simple?

This looks like a nylon stocking stretched over the bowl!  Is that raw brass chain being antiqued?  What's in the bowl?

It's plain household vineger!

You control the color by the amount of time the brass spends suspended above the vinegar.  Make sure the lid fits tightly (or it stinks up the place) and leave your brass components in for a few minutes.  These filigrees were in for 30 minutes.  You can check them at any time.  Take them out when they are the right color.  Wash and dry and they are done! You may want to polish a bit with a polishing cloth if needed.
When the process gets too slow, add more vinegar!
